It always strikes me as really funny when people judge a designer’s worth,
by how he/she dresses up.
Actually it isn’t so funny, sometimes, it is rather annoying.
Most people presume that someone like Victoria Beckham , Karl Lagerfeld or Kate Moss would do a better job of designing collections , because they are personally very stylish.
( Don’t get me wrong , I love these above-mentioned personalities and I love the fact that they dress up so well and enjoy their world of fashion so much.)
But, I feel like telling the presumptuous folks- “Okay now go look at Nicolas Ghesquière, or Alber Elbaz , (or now the Rodarte sisters ) and tell me if their designs are any less impressive because they dress to please themselves, and not you”.
I don’t mean to say that these designers are not well-dressed , they all have their own sense of personal style for themselves, they don’t dress to impress, they design great clothes to impress.
All designers usually have a highly developed aesthetic sense, otherwise they wouldn’t be designers at all, but what I’m trying to say is that in order to design good clothes you don’t have to wear them or visualize yourself in them.
Anyway, the truth is out there for those who wish to see it , and there is no need to change people’s dearly held perceptions, as long as they are not holding back great design talent like Kate and Laura Mulleavy (The two sisters behind Rodarte).
